A young lady calls me from time to time. We have never met but I, as a writer, imagine what she is like. I try to create a past, present and future for the disembodied voice on the telephone. This gives me a character I can relate to. I hope you enjoy.
Live well,

Whitney
I hear this voice, so clean and clear,
From far away, she sounds so near.
Breathless hope for future bright,
She wishes and wishes with all her might.
She sounds so young and full of hope,
nothing will faze her, she knows she can cope
with life’s blows that batter and bend.
She’ll see it through to the end.
She knows the way to a better life,
free from care and free from strife.
New life she seeks, not for herself,
Not that she’s left on the shelf.
Her hope’s for others, that they may grow
To reap the harvest of what they sow.
Help, hope and charity
To benefit all society.
The point of my little litany
Is to honour a girl I know as Whitney.
I may never meet this pearl and yet
She is someone I won’t forget.
