Virtue
I have always found it ironic how we tend to judge others on our personal views of virtue. We rush to criticize and yet, so often, merely reinforce our own prejudice.
When I was at primary school we had a young African boy join our class. He was the object of much attention. Some boys baited and teased him. He simply looked at them with a puzzled and gentle air and turned away.
No one attempted to befriend him. I was fascinated by his calm in the face of ridicule. I felt ashamed that I didn’t have the courage to make him a friend. I had no personal animosity towards him. I just lacked the courage to stand up to the bullies. He remained in my memory for a long time.
Virtue
We look at virtue with vision narrowed,
furrowed brows, emotions harrowed.
Women we do hold in view
their love for man they must hold true.
But is virtue only for
the fairer sex and no more?
Couldn’t man be as sensible
of his own deeds; reprehensible?
Punish not, exchange be fair
for each of us who only dare
to love life and another
and never, ever want to smother
the dignity of partner true,
or seek to change another’s view.
