Pollution

These days there is concern for the environment all across the planet, and none too soon. I wrote this poem some years ago, but I think it is now more appropriate than ever. We are so short sighted and so many of us think only of personal benefit. I think each of us, in some small way can contribute to the solution rather than add to the problem.

Here’s a thought, the majority of the world’s population believe in some form of reincarnation. What if you came back to a world where the air was putrid, there were almost no natural resources and civilization had almost broken down because the only preoccupation was simply to survive? Pretty grim huh?

Why don’t we all spare a thought for those to follow us on this planet. A little respect for the environment and I believe the planet will repair itself.
Worth a try.

Live well.

Pollution

Pollution comes in any guise
when will we come to recognise
the truth before it’s too late,
we can’t consume and not replace.

On mining we must all depend
for jobs, where will it all end?
Gnawing, clawing Mother Earth
this all underlines the dearth
of value judgement, veneration
of the coming generation.

What shall we leave the child unborn
a bloodied earth, tattered and torn?
To gain for now the needed wealth,
rob from tomorrow, sullied stealth.

We feel the need to justify,
we change the truth, in fact, we lie.
We say we can provide the best,
but for the few, what of the rest?

The air we breathe is foul and putrid,
surely we can’t be this stupid.
To sacrifice our future health
for the sake of present wealth

How can humankind progress
unless each one of us address
this evil and this sense of need,
we foul the earth in our greed

At least we must appreciate
the situation of our fate.
We must preserve environment
or see to final detriment
our world decays and finally dies.
Is that where mankind’s future lies?
