I recently wrote that I would do a poetical political comment on Zimbabwe as soon as the situation clears and we have some idea of what the future holds for that unfortunate country. The quotation that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely seems, unfortunately, to be very apt in this case.
I note Mugabe is now railing about British imperialism to deflect attention from his own criminal conduct. As Shakespeare is quoted, “Ah the tangled webs we weave when first we practise to deceive.” Was there ever a more relevent and timeless writer in the history of literature?
It doesn’t take a Rhodes scholar to work out the game plan. Reverse the opposition majority, suspend the constitution due to ‘British Imperialist threat’ and rig the rerun for president. I’m already thinking of a title for the poem. Perhaps, “The fraud.” or “Truth according to Wotan.” Any suggestions?
Live well,
Ollie Lind
